Name : Vignesh
Certifications Acquired : SCJP 5, SCWCD for J2EE 5, SCDJWS for J2EE 5, SCBCD for J2EE 5,SCEA -part 1
To do List : * Play with Linux Kernel *Mobile Technology & NetWorks * A simple language (design compiler n interpreter)
Role Model : My role model is my father, Veeraiyan.Born in a small village in Tamil Nadu, he started his academic and professional life with nothing in hand. Driven by personal aspirations and a strong will to learn and grow, he had to work day and night to survive and educate himself. At the end of this tough journey, he has achieved excellence in his personal, social and family life, as well as his career. Today, he is a respected Deputy manager at the Ashok Leyland Ltd (India), and I am very proud of him.
My take on certification : Doing certifications, its not just memorize and regurgitate piece of paper,.If you think certification meant for memorizing the methods and clearing the exam — A big no for this.. I would like to take this exam to learn java /J2EE and it’s my interest too. I would miss some concepts, if I start to read and execute programs without any proper flow/guidance. Certification helps me to understand the concepts and its advantages/disadvantages.
Sun certification may not have much value to improve your probability of getting job. At least it shows that you have been worked hard and spend some time to achieve something which is good for job.
However, there are a lot of pitfalls that most of us are unacquainted that the exam helps us to recognize. Its helps your explanations become clear, concise and consistent.
I would be thankful and grateful to this forum..
I have shaped this blog to assist you all. If you need any help, please drop your queries to my id or drop a comment here… I can get back to you as soon as possible. I am not expert in java, but I have very very little bit awareness of java :)..
hi Vignesh,
Congrats for your success of SCEA exam..!!
I am a Java Developer n planning to prepare for SCEA exam…I got ur details from javaranch.. I have few queries reading this exam..hope u’ll help me to solve .. I have a experience of 2.4 yrs.. n most of people suggest only after 8-10 yrs of experience anyone should think of this exam….r u finding any difficulties while getting d right job for urself ??
the list of Books I find helpful for preparation..
1. sun-certified-enterprise-architect (2nd ed.)- By Mark Cade and Humphrey Sheil
2. Head First Design pattern
3. Core J2EE Patterns
4. EJB in action
Head First Design pattern and Core J2EE Patterns are both required or the both are for same topics?
How is Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 – By Rima Patel Sriganesh,Gerald Brose, Micah Silverman??
promila
Hi Promila ,
Thanks. All the best for your exam. I would like you to take the exam.
R u finding any difficulties while getting d right job for urself ??
Nope. I didn’t find any difficulties, I have cleared so many company interviews.. I have already shared few comp interviews in my blog itself.. Just 7 months back ,I had more than 8 offers and I had tried mostly the prod comps and I have cleared all.
Head First Design pattern and Core J2EE Patterns are both required or the both are for same topics?
Either one of them.. I preferred Core J2EE Patterns since I have already know few patterns and had hands on also. If it’s new to you, then go for Head First Design pattern, they explained each and every topic in depth and it’s meticulously documented.
EJB – I would suggest EJB 3 in Action +
* Ejb-3_0-fr-spec-ejbcore – EJB Spec provided by Sun
*Ejb-3_0-fr-spec-persistence -JPA Spec provided by Sun
You missed about Web services ~~ It’s equally important and so do consider about these things.
MY take on Architects : (Sorry for long post)
Architects – Really we need lot of experience, so taking SCEA exam doesn’t meant that we are architects. Architects design an application, they drive the application, developers (as we) will follow the flow and do the coding part.
Architect would have to think from all the perspective, example take a legacy application and its been developed using java 1.3, EJB 1.2 and deployed in Websphere 4. As an architect, he needs to design to the current trend with higher environment. So he takes Struts/spring mvc/JSF blah blah for web layer deployed in separate JVM and Web services , business logic – applying the design patterns for service layer (deployed in websphere 6.1). So while designing this app, he need to consider about risk mitigation, compatibility issues and it should not break within given environment ( Heap memory ,JVM, App servers,Cluster ) as well as it shld satisfy the end customers and been designed such a way that ,developers can handle easily.
If you are working in a project, I would urge you to take a look on ur current project architecture. From end – end perspective. If you are able to understand all the things, like when end user request something from ur application, think how netscaler or any web agent diverting the calls or do you have xml vpn connections (hw authentication happens) , wat load balancer will do , details about web server and app server as well as how many hits happens in ur application , having any mid tier cache( blah blah..) … Loads of things to take care, while designing an application.. This all we will come only by experience and doing mistakes 🙂 we will learn about this ..
If you are not able to do this in ofc, install an ubuntu server edition using VMWARE or separately.. Install apache http loader for load balancing , glassfish (netbeans) app server , play with ur stuffs ..

Vignesh
hi Vignesh,
thnx alot for information u hav shared here…I am very much new with SCEA preparation n I am collecting all the required information.. I liked ur approach for this exam..to prepare for web components, web services n for EJB certifications first..it will clear all d doubts of these specific topics..I also decided to follow this.
Which book i should choose for web services? Do u hav any links to read more abt project architecture. Mitigation, compatibility issues ,load balancing are new tearms for me. Can I hav ur emailid so i can for solutions for any queires i’ll face.

Web service plays an important role , its simple to create an web service(but lot of things we need to understand ,like xml namespace, wsdl creation , soap protocol,Jax WS ,JAXB )..
I have already shared info abt the web services in my blog itself (here )..

Hi vignesh,
first of all congrats for you achievements..
I am a Java Developer , having 2 years of experience .
and I am planning to prepare for Java Web services Certification.
Actually I want to know Is it good to go for this SCDJWS exam .
I mean future scope of this technology. Is it good for career .
Are there any good job oppertunities after giving this exam.
Actually I already started preparation for this exam [SCDJWS].
I am referering to these following books for preparation.
1. Richard Monson’s book for SOAP, UDDI, JAXR. JAXP
2. Web Services Up and Running book for JAX-WS, JAX-WS security, WSDL
so please guide me for this certification.
Thanx In advance.
Jayant
Hi Jayant,
I would like you to go ahead with this certification. Please understand doing certification won’t help in getting the job. It’s all about the effort & hard work which you put in.
Is it good for career?
Definitely, you will do lot of stuff here.It will add value to ur resume.
SCDJWS: It’s pretty difficult exam when compare to all the certification. I would say, you will learn lot of new stuff (XML Schema, SOAP, REST, WS,JAXB etc).
Quick note:
Creating a web service is a simple task to do, just adding an annotation will make an application(java) to serve as a web service. But that’s not the real work… Understanding the application, creating the wsdl based on the requirement (it shld be backward compatible, like version-ing) , defining/designing the xml schema. It’s really an architecture work ..
Examples: (Xml Schema Design)

Already I have shared few pointers (here).. I will forward few ppts , docs and ws- examples to your gmail id.
All the best ..

Vignesh
Hi Vignesh, request you to pl s share the ppts, docs at my email id also hegdekiranr [at] gmail [dot] com, TIA
